...A team approach
MS affects every person differently.
Therefore, each patient has unique treatment
needs. The patient who comes to the MS Center receives a
thorough neurologic evaluation by a board certified neurologist
who is an MS specialist. Problems pertaining to MS are
identified and medication or other therapies are prescribed
where appropriate. Referrals to physicians in other specialties,
e.g. internal medicine, gynecology, urology, etc. can be made
when necessary. Patients who are in need of rehabilitation may
be seen by the Director of the Department of Rehabilitation
Medicine at Holy Name Hospital. The Center also has the services
of a consulting psychiatrist available.

A certified nurse
practitioner helps patients learn self-care activities such as
bladder management. For many patients, these activities are
stepping stones to a more independent lifestyle. Other nursing
services include patient and family education, patient advocacy,
and coordination of services available at the Center and in the
community.

Counseling services, including individual, family, and group
programs help
patients and families adjust to multiple sclerosis and its
ramifications. Patients frequently become participants in support
and therapeutic groups of the Center or local MS Chapters.
Individual counseling services are also available.
