The MS Center at
Holy Name Hospital is New Jersey’s only state licensed non-profit facility
providing healthcare and related services exclusively for those with MS and
their families. Services are provided to all patients, regardless of
their ability to pay, and are financed entirely through patient
revenues, grants, contributions, and special events. The staff of MS experts
provides a level of healthcare equal to none and is globally recognized for
their skills. The Center is counting on the
continuing support of our friends and community to make the coming year the
most successful year in the Center’s history.
Please consider making a gift to the MS Center. Because of your commitment, the Center is able to continue working to ensure that no one faces multiple sclerosis alone. Please remember that many of our patients are uninsured and count on us for a variety of services. No one is ever turned away for lack or insurance. Please give generously - your contribution will make a world of difference. Attention patients and friends of the MS Center: Please help us with our fundraising by supporting our events as much as possible. You can even call the Development Office with your own fundraising ideas! We'll be happy to work with you. We welcome ideas for our already planned or new special events and fund raising projects for the coming year. A number of supporters have come to our aid in recent months. For example, You may have read the wonderful and inspiring piece about the dedicated group “Lisa’s Team”, this group consisted of one of our patients and her loving family. This family, along with the support of their local community banded together and held their own fundraising events. All of the funds raised through these events were graciously donated to the Center for the second straight year in the patient’s name, and we will continue to assist and coordinate activities in support of their efforts in the future! We also had the good fortune receiving the support of 14-year-old Sam Hertz, son of Sharyn & David Hertz. Last year, Sam decided he wanted to do something nice for his coach, who is a patient of the Center. Sam and 10 friends bowled one night at Montvale Lanes in Montvale, NJ and raised well over $5,000! Each child was “sponsored” by friends and family from 10 cents-$1.00 per pin knocked down! THIS YEAR, Sam’s 2nd Annual Bowl-a-thon raised just under $10,000!!!!! Now that’s a bowl-a-thon! Way to go Sam! In another instance, a well known local restaurant, Dinallo’s in Hackensack ran their own Charity Golf Outing for a second consecutive year and donated their proceeds to us! We’d like to thank Bobby Dinallo and Janet Sudak for their continued support and dedication to the Center! This gesture of support was done at the suggestion of a dear friend of the MS Center! Coincidently, another charity golf outing, the "Robert Schreiber Golf Outing" also has chosen to have their proceeds directly benefit us due to the efforts of another one of our patients. On October 1st, 2005, The 5th Annual Rob Schreiber Memorial Golf Outing went off without a hitch!!! We'd like to extend a sincere thank you once again to Gregg Ilardi, Tom Regan and Peter Macaluso of Pitney Hardin Associates, a prestigious law firm in Florham Park, NJ for donating all proceeds from their event to our beloved MS Center for the past two years! Robert was an associate at Pitney Hardin when he died tragically at the age of 32. Since then his dedicated firm has vowed to keep his name alive by doing an annual golf outing in his name. Golf outings have certainly been good to us over the years!!! We look forward to many years of working together with these remarkable people. Without the support of our dedicated team of volunteers, the Center would not be in the shape that it’s in today…. The Center has also been the fortunate recipient of a bequest of real estate after the passing of one of our very dear patients, in memory of his gallant fight against MS. The relationships that the Center builds with our patients and their families has led to many, long lasting fund raising activities, that grow more gratifying and successful with each passing year. As you can see, there is so many ways to raise funds to support our Center, either through our development efforts and events, or right in your own community! The possibilities are endless! You could do a “kids coupon book”, a local entertainment book, a cookbook, an art auction, a Monte Carlo night, car wash, lemonade stand, even a male review!!!!!! Get creative! Have some fun! Please support the MS Center as much as you can so that we can continue our mission of providing quality care to ALL patients, regardless of their ability to pay! Always remember that all donations received go directly to patient care. Lisa Futterman, the Director of Development will be happy to help you in any way to help your fundraising idea to be successful! Lastly, please remember to include the MS Center in your list of charities throughout the year. Please remember that we do not benefit from donations to the national or local chapter of the MS Society; the only events that directly benefit the MS Center are those that are dedicated to our Center; contact our Development Office to coordinate your charitable activities with us. Please bookmark our Center's updated website on your computer for all the latest information on events and important issues facing the challenges of multiple sclerosis. You can also email our website to friends, family and colleagues that may not be familiar with the many special events that we do and the many ways we help people every day! The MS Comprehensive Care Center at Holy Name Hospital - Our Mission The MS Center at Holy Name Hospital is New Jersey’s only non-profit licensed facility providing healthcare and related services exclusively for MS patients and their families. MS services are provided to all patients, regardless of their ability to pay, financed entirely through patient revenues, grants, contributions, and special events. No one is ever turned away because of inadequate insurance or a lack of private resources. The staff of MS experts provides a level of healthcare equal to none and is globally recognized for their skills. Continued advances in the treatment of MS makes the array of services provided more costly than ever before. Meeting the Challenges of Multiple Sclerosis Multiple Sclerosis is the most commonly diagnosed neurologic disease in young adults. It strikes people between the ages of 15 and 60 with the highest incidence between 20 and 40 years of age. Multiple sclerosis, while not fatal, often is quite disabling and is always unpredictable. It changes people’s lives, careers, hopes, and dreams. Multiple sclerosis may be compared to an electrical short circuit: the myelin sheath (fatty tissue surrounding the nerves) becomes scarred, thus inhibiting the flow of messages from the brain to various parts of the body. In addition, connections from one nerve to another may be destroyed (axonal loss) resulting in permanent disability. Common symptoms of multiple sclerosis include impaired coordination, bladder or bowel dysfunction, speech and visual problems, numbness and fatigue, weakness, and in advanced cases, paralysis. Although not a reportable disease, it is estimated that approximately 500,000 people in the United States have MS with over 200 people diagnosed each week. The MS Comprehensive Care Center at Holy Name Hospital is the only non-profit, state licensed health care facility devoted exclusively to the care of people with multiple sclerosis in New Jersey. The Center was founded in 1985 and since then has more than met its mission to provide care to all those affected by MS regardless of ability to pay. In collaboration with Holy Name Hospital, the Center provides a wide range of healthcare and related services. The MS Center achieves its goals by practicing a multi-disciplinary team approach that has proven to be the most effective and efficient way of treating multiple sclerosis. Each year there are well over 8,000 patient visits for neurologic and nursing care, counseling, case management, education, and rehabilitation services on an outpatient and inpatient basis. The hospital is fully equipped with diagnostic and treatment services to enhance MS care. The Center is financed entirely through patient generated revenues, grants, individual contributions, and special events. Its programs and clinical services have expanded far beyond the walls of our facility into people’s homes, businesses and into the New Jersey community. The standard of care of the MS Center has become internationally recognized for excellence and is a model for other centers worldwide.
The demanding economy and tightening reimbursement policies in the public and private sectors are placing the Center in difficult financial circumstances. Our ability to provide comprehensive care to patients with multiple sclerosis has become extremely challenging. We need your help if we are to continue our mission in serving the MS patients who depend on the Center. We are not the National Multiple Sclerosis Society although we are commonly misidentified with them. Community support from people such as you is vital to our fight against MS. The MS Center is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization registered with the State of New Jersey. All contributions are tax deductible and all donated funds go directly to patient care. Our tax ID number is 22-2402959. There are a wide variety of ways for individuals and corporations to help the Center continue its mission. You can support the MS Center through the following: · Cash gifts - Outright cash gifts may be made payable to the MS Center at HNH. · Pledges - Payable over time, pledges may enable a donor to contribute a larger gift than is possible at one time. · Matching Gifts - Many corporations will match employee charitable giving; check with your employer for the availability of matching programs. · Life Insurance - Naming the Center as a beneficiary of a policy or transferring ownership of one with a surrender value may aid the Center for years to come on the future. · Bequests - Providing for the Center in your will can have significant federal and estate tax advantages. · Real estate – Appraised at fair market value, gifts of real estate can provide substantial tax benefits. · Planned Gifts – Will allow you to maximize your contribution, while ensuring beneficial tax planning coordinated with you’re own financial future. A Gift to the MS Center Tribute Fund is also another special way to let someone close to you know that you are thinking of him or her. At the same time, your generosity helps strengthen the Center’s commitment to our patients.
The Development Office of the Center can assist you with information on any of these contribution methods. Volunteer to Help The Center always welcomes volunteers and input to help support its many functions. If you are interested in volunteering in any way, have any friends, relatives, or business associates that you feel can help us or simply have any questions about these events or about the work that we do, please call at 201-837-0727, ext. 3899 or email LFutterman1@aol.com.
